🩸 Thalassemia Awareness: A Hidden Struggle in Pakistan
This blog aims to educate readers about Thalassemia, its impact in Pakistan, and the efforts of JZT Ambassadors to support patients and raise awareness.
What Is Thalassemia?
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disease passed from parents to children. A person with Thalassemia cannot produce enough healthy hemoglobin, which is needed to carry oxygen in the blood. Because of this, patients need regular blood transfusions—sometimes every 2 to 3 weeks—to stay alive.
If both parents carry the Thalassemia gene, there is a 25% chance that their child will be born with this disease. That’s why awareness and testing before marriage are very important.
Situation in Pakistan
Pakistan has one of the highest numbers of Thalassemia patients in the world. Every year, around 5,000 new cases are reported. Many families cannot afford the cost of regular blood transfusions and medicines. Sadly, due to lack of awareness, many people still do not get tested before marriage.
Government and NGO Efforts
- 🏥 Thalassemia Centers have been opened in many public hospitals to provide free blood transfusions.
- 💉 Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Program (PTPP) runs screening and awareness campaigns.
- ❤ NGOs like Fatimid Foundation, Sundas Foundation, and Hussaini Blood Bank are doing great work by collecting blood, giving free medicines, and counseling families.
